Staten Island Lawmaker Creates Signs Protecting Handicapped Parking

The Staten Island Mall will see an increase in signs warning shoppers not to park in handicapped spots.

With the holiday shopping season in full swing, one Staten Island lawmaker is urging drivers to be mindful of where they park at the mall.

Assemblyman Michael Cusick has made it a holiday tradition to put up signs around the Staten Island Mall urging shoppers to leave handicapped parking for those who truly need it.

“You still get those couple of people who might park because they think they’ll only run into the store for a minute, or they’ll only be there for a couple of minutes" said Cusick, "and we’re trying to tell people that one minute affects the entire day of someone living with a disability."

Assemblyman Cusick launched a Handicapped Parking Task Force when he first entered office eight years ago after receiving several complaints. The task force works with local organizations giving high school students community service points for putting up signs during the busy holiday season.
