New Yorkers Fight Against Human Trafficking

Officials and advocates want to end human trafficking in the state of New York.

A new campaign in New York City aims to put a stop to human trafficking.

The organizations "Sanctuary for Families" and the "New York State Anti-Trafficking Coalition" launched what they're calling "New York's New Abolitionists."

Sanctuary for Family's Executive Director Judy Harris Kluger said the trafficking of women for prostitution is a problem throughout New York State. She said the campaign will work to change the way people view victims of this crime.

"There still is not the public recognition that the people in prostitution are not doing this because they want to. They're doing this because they have been victimized in some way," Kluger said.

Kluger said many runaways are preyed on by traffickers and then forced into prostitution. Her group says on any given night in New York, more than 4,000 youth are bought, sold, and trafficked.
