Flatbush Seniors Bid Farewell to Marty Markowitz

As 2013 comes to an end, so does Marty Markowitz's twelve-year run as Brooklyn Borough President.

Members of the Senior Citizens League of Flatbush saluted Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz to the tune of 'Hello Dolly' at a luncheon in his honor.

He founded the center in 1973 when he was only 28 years old, just a few years after he organized the Flatbush Tenants Council.  Lenore Friedman's known Markowitz since he hired her as the center's first and only Executive Director.  She calls him a true ambassador of Brooklyn.

"He just fought for everything.  He brought us the stadium; he brought us the Nets; he brought us all the wonderful concerts."

During his three terms in office, Markowitz fought to keep struggling hospitals and senior centers open.  Now he's 68 and a proud member of the Flatbush league himself.

"I was guided by the following: whatever you do for senior citizens today - God willing - you'll enjoy tomorrow."

Markowitz says his final hopes for the new administration will be to address seniors, and their need for affordable housing, safe transportation, and thriving hospitals.  Eric Adams succeeds Markowitz as borough president Jan 1.
