Environmental Advocates to Help With Jersey Shore Rebirth

Advocates plan to rebuild back damaged coastlines

An environmental organization is looking to restore Jersey Shore beaches hit hard by Superstorm Sandy.

The group is launching a year-long recovery program, called "Waves for Action," which aims to improve and protect the coastline and its waterways.  It will also assist with sustainable redevelopment, debris cleanup, and projects to improve water quality.  The group's Cindy Zipf said the project looks to make repairs that are environmentally friendly and add greener infrastructure.

"We can maximize energy conservation and really make the Jersey shore not only a stellar tourism destination but an example of how we can build for future climate change," said Zipf.

Another facet of the program is it's educational outreach.  Sean Dixon, who is a Coastal Policy Attorney at Clean Ocean Action, added the initiatives will help educate communities about environmental problems and climate change.

"The knowledge of all these coastal processes, the knowledge of all the dangers and risks, as well as knowledge of all the regulations and laws that are designed to help protect us from harm are vital to any rebuild or recovery over the long term."

Over 12-hundred people have already volunteered to help clean up beaches and waterways in New Jersey and New York.
