Bloomberg Praises Speed Camera Law

The mayor says that putting speed cameras in school zones will increase safety
Mayor Bloomberg wants New York City drivers to slow down in school zones.

The mayor and state lawmakers are praising a new law that will allow the city to place up to 20 cameras in school zones throughout the five boroughs.

The city will issue fifty dollar fines to those who are caught speeding.
Bloomberg says the law was a priority to ensure that N.Y.C. schools are safe.

He states, "You shouldn't be speeding, particularly when you go near schools, these are our children.  We were all children once and thank God nobody hit us. We just want to make sure we don't hit anybody else."

The five-year pilot program will place cameras in areas that have histories of excessive speeding and traffic accident injuries.
