Barns Courtney at WFUV

Barns Courtney breezed into FUV's Bronx studios recently. This young man, who may or may not be old enough to legally drink a beer in the United States, caught a life-changing break when his song "Fire" was used in the film "Burnt" last year. A record deal soon followed.

Since that time, the pedal has been to the metal in Courtney's career: after my session with him, he sat in the hallway and stared at his cell phone, evaluating shots for a future video. He appears unfazed, appreciative of the attention, and not unworthy of it.

Courtney was born in Ipswich, England, but moved to Seattle as a child where he grew up until returning to the UK as a teen. Despite his youth, he's got some valuable experience under his belt—he was even the member of a group that made an album which was never released.

In our conversation, Courtney laughed at the ineptitude of some of those early bands and revealed some of the experiences that helped him write the tracks for his EP, The Hands.
