Just revealed secret documents show U.S. officials discussed sending Bob Dylan, James Taylor, Don Maclean and Joni Mitchell to the Soviet Union in 1975 to undermine communism. The American ambassador in Moscow suggested trying soft rock, blues/rock, or country rock, because "soul genre not of top interest here." Further down on the list of artists considered were the Allman Brothers Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Poco and The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.
This raises many questions. The most important being, "If you wanted to undermine communism today in China, Vietnam or North Korea, whom would you send?" (Cuba has better music than us, so don't even try.) Leave your suggestions in the comments below.
1. "Political Science", Randy Newman
2. "Don't Worry About the Government", Talking Heads
3. "Freedom", Richie Havens
4. "Everyone Deserves Music", Michael Franti & Spearhead
