Austin City Limits Music Festival 2010

by Janeen Shaitelman

Sold out for three days (that’s 100,000 tickets PER DAY). Perfect weather, awesome city, it was amazing and a testament to the music and artists that WFUV and The Alternate Side strive to bring daily. My 2 cents from 2 days of Festival.

Bands I had not heard of but loved: Band of Heathens, Beats Antique, Dough Rollers, The Jane Spencers

Bands I knew, but misjudged before and really enjoyed: Kinky, Nortec Collective, Matt & Kim

Bands I knew well and was sooo happy to see: Phish, Robert Randolph and the Family Band, Ozomatli, Monsters of Folk, the xx, M.I.A., Broken Bells

Bands that underwhelmed me: Slightly Stoopid, Muse, Vampire Weekend, Beach House, Deadmau5

Bands I am really mad I am missing from day 3: The National, Band of Horses, Edward Sharpe, Martin Sexton, Norah Jones

Best festival food: Definitely, Fried Avocado cone from The Mighty Cone

Best mode of Austin transportation: Pedicabs. Our driver, Aaron was from New Zealand and if you ask him, he will blow the conch shell for you he wears.

Best downtown Austin late night food truck: Coreanos (Mexican/Korean fusion, OMG!!!

Favorite airport moment: In the Austin airport in the food section I was simultaneously within 5 feet of both Alejandro Escavedo (did not play ACL but lives in Austin and was on his way out of town) and Broken Bells (played ACL and was on their way out of town). They didn’t even see each other. Do they even know each other. Danger Mouse was enjoying some last minute Texas BBQ before boarding.

Things that bummed me out at little: This year more than in the past, the sound from the stages bled into each others and it was very hard to listen to some of the music. For example, Monsters of Folk was on a smaller stage than they needed for their crowd.

It’s a great festival. C3 Presents, the promoter and producer (they also do Lollapalooza) puts on a great show and Austin as a city it a great host.

Check for pictures from the fun.
