Rodrigo Sanchez and Gabriela Quintero are virtuosos who together make up arguably the most exciting touring two guitar group of any genre. The question of what genre they represent is not easily answered as they play acoustically with the tremendous speed and dexterity associated with groups like Metallica but with the finesse and technique of jazz and flamenco artists like Al Di Meola and Paco de Lucia.
On their latest album, Area 52, Rod y Gab expanded upon their duo format for the first time when they decided to follow a long held wish to travel to Havana and collobarate with local musicians. They were joined this past Friday at Radio City Music Hall by a handful of Cuban players who provided some extraordinary textures (especially with percussion) to Rod y Gab compositions.
When I spoke to Gabriela before the show, I had to work a little to hold it together as she is beautiful, loves Black Sabbath, and is one of the most innovative guitar players in the world. The interview will air soon. Here's the breathtaking performance from Friday.
