Gary Clark, Jr. - Live at SXSW - 2012

Austin's hometown-guy-who-exploded-this-year, Gary Clark, Jr., kicked off the WFUV Showcase at SXSW 2012. We've been fans for a long time (Words & Music 2012 - Words & Music 2011), and it's amazing to see people lining up to see more of him, and not just the blues aficionados.

He filled the room as a solo performer, doing three acoustic songs with amazing guitar solos. He's such a natural that he swept into the room at 11:56am for a 12 noon start (didn't we just say he was really in demand?) after a night of playing out at Willie Nelson's ranch.

It was the perfect way to celebrate being in the music capital of the world, also home to the second band in the showcase, Shearwater.

Set list:

  • When The Sun Goes Down
  • When My Train Pulls In
  • Bright Lights

Indians at CMJ - Live Concert - 2012

Copenhagen's Søren Løkke Juul, who goes by the moniker Indians, recently signed to 4AD after releasing a spate of well-received singles. His debut album, Somewhere Else, is due on January 29 (January 28 in the UK/EU) and his solo appearance at WFUV and The Alternate Side's CMJ showcase was an early tease: Indians, the full band version, will join Other Lives for a 38-date North American tour beginning in late October.

Juul's Tuesday night set at the Living Room, his first of only three CMJ shows, was a harbinger of very good things to come. He was a mesmerizing presence, accompanying himself — and his strong, clear voice — with keyboads, loops and acoustic guitar for introspectively-drawn, elegant songs like "I Am Haunted." There is a stately, dreamy pace to the songs from Somewhere Else — an apt title for a beguiling, expansive collection of songs. Astonishingly, Juul has only been playing live since last February.

Discover more about Indians here; Juul and his band play Bowery Ballroom on November 28 and Music Hall of Williamsburg on November 29.

She also spoke with me about the wait between albums, where the Delta factors into the sound and spirit of her songs, and why she and husband, Greg Brown, keep their songwriting separate.

JD McPherson - Live Concert - 2012

JD McPherson was raised on a cattle ranch in Oklahoma and hit stylistic pay dirt when he found some 1950s rock 45s in the discard bin at a local record store. Now the former punk rocker has a dynamite debut album of R&B-tinged rockabilly, called 'Signs and Signifiers,' and JD and his band recently performed a shredding FUV Live set for us at Rockwood Music Hall, hosted by Rita Houston. Lake Street Dive at Holiday Cheer for WFUV - Live Concert - 2012

FUV is all about supporting new artists, and if you'd heard Lake Street Dive on FUV or seen video of their Kevin Bacon-approved cover of "I Want You Back," you knew we were in for quite a kick-off at this year's Holiday Cheer for FUV. If you didn't know the Brooklyn-via-Boston band before that night, well, they took full advantage of the biggest stage they'd ever played and won over a whole new crop of music fans.

Check out Lake Street Dive's backstage interview with FUV's Russ Borris here, and listen to all of Holiday Cheer for WFUV: Live from The Beacon Theatre, online anytime.

Special thanks to Fairway Market and to MSG Entertainment and The Beacon Theatre.

Lissie- Live Concert- 2011

Lissie's music is usually described as folk or Americana, but if you listen closely-especially to her covers of artists like Lady Gaga, Nelly Furtado, and Kid Cudi-you'll hear a lot of other influences too, along with a very powerful set of vocal cords. Lissie's full-length debut album Catching A Tiger is out now, and 'FUV's Alisa Ali talked with her backstage at a recent show at Manhattan's Hiro Ballroom.

Little Green Cars at CMJ - Live Concert - 2012

Little Green Cars, the young Dublin band that closed out the WFUV/TAS CMJ showcase on October 16 with a rousing set, just released their debut single, the anthemic stomp "The John Wayne," back in July. But thanks to rich, five-part Fleet Foxes-reminscent harmonies, catchy choruses and confident live sets that earned them enthusiastic grassroots support, Little Green Cars, its members all barely out of their teens, emerged as one of the most enthusiastically hyped bands of this year's CMJ Music Marathon.

They were duly anointed as one six "bands to watch" by the New York Times during CMJ week and the five friends seem destined for a swift ascent. Little Green Cars recorded their debut album, due out early next year, with producer Markus Dravs of Arcade Fire and Mumford & Sons fame. If Little Green Cars songs like the gospel-tinged "River Song" and the yearning "Harper Lee" are any indication, they'll be spending a lot more time Stateside in 2013.

LP - Live Concert - 2012

You've probably heard this big-voiced, ukulele-wielding singer-songwriter, even if you haven't heard of her. Well, we'd like to change that. LP has written songs for Rihanna and Christina Aguilera, but it's her own super-powerful performances that are really earning attention. One show was this recent FUV Live set at Rockwood Music Hall, which featured songs from her EP, 'Into The Wild,' talk of LP's upcoming album, and a Roy Orbison cover.

Lucinda Williams at Holiday Cheer for WFUV - Live Concert - 2012

Holiday Cheer for FUV headliner Lucinda Williams followed the lead of Shelby Lynne, Steve Earle and Shawn Colvin and performed her first song ("Lake Charles") with just voice and guitar. It was a nod to the artform that sits at the core of her songs, which have been tugging at our ears, hearts and minds for years. Her set didn't stay quiet for long though... thanks to her killer band, and some help from Steve Earle too.

Re-live Lucinda's set below and and check out what Lucinda had to say after the show, when she talked with FUV's Eric Holland backstage. You can also listen to all of Holiday Cheer for WFUV: Live from The Beacon Theatre, online anytime.

Lyle Lovett - Live Concert - 2012

Seeing a concert at the Prospect Park Bandshell is a surefire good way to spend a summer night. Seeing Lyle Lovett close out the 2012 Celebrate Brooklyn season on August 11 was something special, and WFUV and NPR Music were there to record the concert.

Whether he's backed by his Large Band or (in this case) his Acoustic Group, Lyle always surrounds himself with superb musicians. The core at Celebrate Brooklyn was a string quartet, comprised of a couple of youngsters - Keith Sewell on guitar and mandolin and Luke Bulla on violin - and a couple of longtime Lyle cohorts - John Hagen on cello and Viktor Krauss on bass - plus the legendary Russ Kunkel on drums. Like Lyle, they wore charcoal gray suits and ties and looked mighty sharp.

Lyle was classy, witty, and generous, giving his sidemen a chance to shine and bringing Arnold McCulloch, Aoife O'Donovan (who opened the evening with her band) and Kat Edmondson onstage for vocal turns. The evening was a mix-and-match of various combinations of three, four, or more musicians, and the set list, while drawing on his most recent CD, "Release Me, included plenty of faves from throughout his career. As always, there was barely a genre - country, folk, blues, swing, bluegrass - left untouched. The last few numbers - "That's Right You're Not From Texas," "White Freight Liner Blues" and the encore, "Can't Resist It" - showed what a juggernaut this group can be. He's been at this for nigh on 30 years, and Lyle remains at the top of his game.
