Tift Merritt

Question of the Day: Birds

by Corny O'Connell

Tonight at 9 we've got Andrew Bird (and guest Tift Merritt) in an intimate concert for WFUV's marquee members. That got us to thinking about songs mentioning birds. There's a whole gaggle of them to choose from. Lay a few in the comments below and we'll spin a set after 9am.

Here's what we played:

Richard Shindell "There Goes Mavis"

Neville Brothers "Bird On A Wire"

It's A Beautiful Day "White Bird"

Andrew Bird - FUV Live - 2013

by Alisa Ali

Andrew Bird performs an FUV Live concert at Rockwood Music Hall with special guest Tift Merritt. They played the title track from Andrew's latest release, I Want to See Pulaski at Night, as well as a bunch of classic Bird songs and some covers too. I also got a chance to talk with Andrew about the new EP and his new perspective on touring.

Tift Merritt and Simone Dinnerstein came together from very different worlds (Tift from rock and Simone from classical music) for a very creative collaboration called "Night." I invited them into Studio A for a session to share the leaps of faith they each took to make the project work and to perform songs from it, including a Schubert piece, Billie Holiday's "Don't Explain," a traditional song, and a couple of Tift's originals.

Tift Merritt

It's not as if Tift Merritt had been playing it safe before, but when she found herself without a manager or a label last year, she decided to go full speed ahead. On her own dime and direction, Tift made one of her best albums yet. It's called Traveling Alone, and it's a rich celebration of just that. Hear more about the journey and the new songs, in Tift's latest visit to Studio A.

Texas-born songwriter Tift Merritt is now a resident of New York City, but she traveled even further to write her latest album 'Another Country.' Paris provides the muse, country and classic 70s songwriting inspire the sound, and Claudia Marshall asks the questions as Tift stops by Studio-A.
