When your dad is the late Texas bluesman Johnny Copeland, there's no point in running from your destiny with music. So Shemekia Copeland embraced it, and even at 33, she's earned her "Queen of the Blues" stripes. Now Shemekia is back with a mix of covers and originals on the new album 33 1/3, and she stopped by FUV to belt out a few of the songs live.
This session gives strong evidence why Shemekia was presented Koko Taylor's crown by Koko's daughter, and pronounced to be the new 'Queen of the Blues' in 2011. She's a tremendous singer, and here she recalls her childhood in Harlem and her Dad Johnny while showcasing tracks from her Never Going Back CD.
