Joseph Arthur

Joseph Arthur - Live Concert - 2013

by Carmel Holt

It seemed right that Joseph Arthur would perform his songs live for us under a Blue Moon. Artists like him are just as rare. A long time FUV fave, Joseph Arthur is an artist in the truest sense of the word. A prolific painter, poet, and songwriter, he's released ten albums and eleven EPs over the past two decades, not including his two recent collaborative efforts with bands Fistful of Mercy (with Ben Harper and Dhani Harrison) and RNDM (with Pearl Jam's Jeff Ament). He simultaneously cranks out paintings, in the past literally creating visual art during live shows.

Joseph Arthur - FUV Live - 2013

The Ballad Of Boogie Christ is an album that was many years in the making for musician Joseph Arthur. Now that the record is out, Joseph feels a huge sense of relief and accomplishment.

Joseph Arthur recently stopped by WFUV's Studio A and brought along percussionist Bill Dobrow to chat about the new album & play some of the new songs. Hijinks ensue.

Warning: a few very bad jokes will be told during this interview.

What do you get when you take Pearl Jam bassist Jeff Ament, his Three Fish bandmate Richard Stuverud on drums, and toss in the prolific Joseph Arthur? It's an accidental match, but a great band, called RNDM. The guys' debut album, Acts, was created in only four days, and its release recently brought the trio to New York City where I caught up with them at Electric Lady Studios.

For Brooklyn-based songwriter Joseph Arthur, there is no shortage of inspiration or means of expression when it comes to art. Some days you'll find him painting, but lately he's concentrated on a new record label and his fifth CD, 'Nuclear Daydream.' Tonight Joseph, his band, and his mom, join Claudia Marshall in Studio-A.

Joseph Arthur never has to book studio time again thanks to his latest endeavor -- a performance and gallery space in Brooklyn called (appropriately) the Museum of Modern Arthur. Last month, that's where Joseph performed his first U.S. solo show in 2 years, and Julianne Welby chatted with him after the set about his painting and music, including the 4 new EPs due out this year.

With a batch of 4 new EPs already out, Brooklyn's Joseph Arthur is set to release the full length album 'Temporary People' in the fall. So 'prolific' is an understatement, and Joseph shared some new material and a few thoughts on his busy year during an interview with Claudia Marshall.

Earlier this year, Joseph Arthur asked his friend Ben Harper if he wanted to work together on a few tracks. They soon invited George Harrison's son Dhani to join the project, and three days after going into the studio, they came out as a new band-Fistful of Mercy-with a new record-'As I Call You Down.' Recently, Fistful Of Mercy talked with 'FUV's Darren DeVivo, and played a set of live songs from the album. [10/7/10]
