One on One hit the road on August 25th as we traveled to Bethpage Park in Farmingdale, NY for the first round of the FedEx Cup Playoffs.
We were very fortunate to have numerous guests join us this day. First up was off Barclays Tournament Chairman Peter Mele. He told us how he worked his way up from initially being tournament volunteer to his current position. Also, he went on to say how no one was more thrilled about the beautiful weather for the tournament than he was after having to deal with Hurricane Irene last year.
Hank Gola of the New York Daily News and member of the Board of Directors of the Golf Writers Association of America was our next guest. He was surprised with how well some of the players were doing on a traditionally extremely difficult course, and gaveus his pick for the eventual winner. Since Hank is a local writer, he was really able to explain to us what having a major golf tournament in Farmingdale meant to the New York golf fans.
GolfWeek Magazine writer Jim McCabe then joined us and told us how Bethpage Park compares to his favorite golf courses and explained how the pressure of a U.S Open can make a significant difference on a golfer's game.
Finally, 1979 Fordham alum and 1989 Fordham Athletic Hall of Fame inductee Pierre Davis, one of the head volunteers at the Barclays, came on the show. Pierre gave us insight about the unsung heroes of the tournament, the volunteers, telling us how they have to pay $65 dollars to work the event – talk about dedication! We also learned what the duties of the volunteers are.
