Athletic Competition Begins with Many Encouraging Words

The USA Special Olympics is taking place this week in New Jersey. This story on the the first day of competition is the second of a week-long series.

After a superb opening ceremony at the Prudential Center on Sunday night, formal athletic competition at the 2014 Special Olympics USA Games began on Monday at sites across southern New Jersey. Ranging from bocce at The College of New Jersey to soccer at Mercer County Park, the games all benefited from stellar weather conditions. Throughout the day, athletes from across the country showcased their skills and displayed why they are true champions.

Ahead of the first events and multiple ribbon cutting ceremonies, the athletes received many encouraging words from both professional athletes and celebrities. Professional golfer Phil Mickelson and Rutgers University head football coach Kyle Flood praised the athletes. Additionally, many local sports personalities, including Ryan Ruocco, Michael Kay, and Jack Curry shared messages with the athletes. Above all as a founding partner of the 2014 Special Olympics USA Games WWE, World Wrestling Entertainment, offered an overwhelming amount of support for the athletes. Chief Brand Officer Stephanie McMahon and WWE Superstar Big Show spoke incredibly highly of each of the competitors. Interviews with them courtesy of Special Olympics are included below.

Competition continues each day this week through Friday, and spectators are encouraged to attend. All events are free admission. Stay tuned for continuing coverage from the Special Olympics all week right here on WFUV Sports.
