Fordham football head coach and alum agrees to five year extension
After a second consecutive season of national praise for his on field work, Fordham announced it has extended football head coach Joe Moorhead through 2021. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The Rams head coach, who finished his second season at the helm with a second round FCS Playoff loss to Towson, earned the five year extension with a season for the ages. The 2013 Fordham Rams defeated two FCS top-25 teams and upset Temple in Fordham's first win over an FBS team. A perfect home record and a ten game winning streak to open the season helped Moorhead earn his first Patriot League Coach of the Year honors. His efforts also make him a prime candidate for the Eddie Robinson Award (National FCS Coach of the Year) for the second time in as many years.
Moorhead has piloted the Rams to an 18-7 record in two years after inheriting a talent laden but unsuccessful team from Tom Massella. His high octane spread offense has been keyed by both incumbant players (Carlton Koonce, Sam Ajala, Brian Wetzel, Dan Light) and new additions (Michael Nebrich, Tebucky Jones, Jorge Solano, Marcus Jones). Defensively, Fordham led the nation in turnovers forced in 2013.
Moorhead came to Fordham after successful stints as offensive coordinator at Connecticut and Akron. UConn's coaching vacancy led to rumors of the Huskies interest in the 40 year old. The move was a homecoming for the 1996 FCRH grad who had broken numerous records as a signal caller on Rose Hill. Upon his return to New York, he assembled a staff littered with former-FBS power conference assistant coaches and intellegent up and comers.
During the season, Moorhead declined to talk at length about his coaching future, expecting his staff to address the season the same way as his players: with "tremendous singleness of purpose and going 1-0 each week." This deal will allow him to focus that singleness of purpose on recruiting and the 2014 season at Fordham.
@wfuvsports After these last two seasons, I'd be okay if the school offered him a lifetime contract. Terrific coach and an even better guy— Alex Smith (@AlexSmith720) December 10, 2013
@wfuvsports the Moorhead extension is great news! I'm looking forward to seeing him lead our Rams to victory for many years to come!— John Papp (@JohnbPapp) December 10, 2013
