Postgame press conference sheds light on the Rams defeat.

It wasn’t supposed to end this way.  A magical run to the Atlantic 10 Final by Fordham women’s basketball ended in bitter disappointment at the Barclays Center, as the Rams fell to the Hawks of Saint Joseph’s, 47-46.  Saint Joseph’s, by virtue of their tournament victory, claimed the Atlantic 10’s automatic bid to the NCAA tournament and the league’s championship trophy.  For Fordham, the loss dimmed hopes of an NCAA tournament berth as the Rams wait to hear of their postseason fate on Monday night.

Fordham took an early 12-0 lead as Saint Joseph’s started 0 for 10 from the field. The Hawks entered the half trailing by eight, but came out of the intermission firing.  Natasha Cloud, the tournament MVP, played a big role in the second half resurgence of the Hawks and finished with a team high 15 points.

Fordham had an opportunity late, trailing 47-46, but with the ball and 29 seconds remaining.  The resulting possession wouldn't produce a shot, ending in a highly controversial offensive foul call under the basket with less than ten seconds to go.  The Rams had one more chance after a missed Hawks free throw, but couldn’t draw the rim on a three-fourths court shot with less than one second remaining.

Fordham's Marah Strickland and Erin Rooney were named to the all-tournament team by assembled media.  After the game, Rooney and Strickland joined Coach Stephanie Gaitley in the postgame press conference at the Barclays Center.
