Young Rams look to improve once again under leadership of Pecora and Gaston
As the weather starts to get colder and the leaves around Rose Hill change colors, it means one thing: Fordham basketball is right around the corner.
The Rams enter the 2012-2013 with a talented roster and high hopes. Head Coach Tom Pecora was brought in following a 2009-2010 season in which the Rams posted an overall record of 2-26. The Rams have improved their overall record in each of Pecora’s first two seasons in the Bronx. Entering his third season, Pecora will look to improve upon last year’s 10-19 record.
Fordham’s schedule will be extremely challenging this year. If the Rams want to have a successful year, they will need to be road warriors. The team won’t play a game at the Rose Hill gym until November 29th, and play difficult opponents like Pittsburgh, Ole Miss, Georgia Tech, Harvard, and UConn away from home. The Rams also drew the Preseason A10 favorite Saint Joe’s Hawks as the A10 opponent that they will play twice this year. Factor in games against A10 newcomers and emerging powerhouses VCU and Butler, and the Rams’ schedule becomes even more daunting.
The main man for the Rams on the court this year will be senior forward Chris Gaston. Gaston has led the team in scoring and rebounding for the past three seasons. Entering his senior year, Gaston is in 11th place on Fordham’s all-time scoring list. With aspirations of being drafted in June’s NBA Draft, he will look to improve upon his outside jumper and take on a leadership role on a very young team.
The Rams feature two seniors (Gaston and Khalid Robinson) and only one junior, guard Branden Frazier. Sophomore guard Bryan Smith will look to become a better overall player, and fellow sophomore Ryan Canty will step into the starting center position.
