Postgame Report: Xavier 67 Fordham 59

by Ricky Cibrano
A A

Fordham's home win streak halted at 4.

With expectations high after knocking off Georgia Tech and #22 ranked Harvard in their last two home games, Fordham came up a little short Saturday afternoon when hosting the team that’s been the class of the A-10 for the past decade, the Xavier Musketeers. In a back and forth game, the young Rams yielded to the Musketeers 67-59, falling to 7-8 on the season and 0-2 in the Atlantic 10.

In what’s become a theme so far this season, it was ultimately an early 2nd half run by the opposition that did the Rams in. With Fordham trailing 35-30 at the break, Xavier went on a 13-4 run to start the 2nd half, putting the Rams in a 14 point hole they were unable to climb out of. Despite the best efforts of Branden Frazier, who had a game high 22 points and 5 steals, and the capacity crowd, which was loud and boisterous the entire game, the Rams got no closer than 5 the rest of the way.

Fordham’s leading scorer and rebounder Chris Gaston, who had been averaging 20 points and 14 boards over his last 7 games, never got going. He finished with just 10 points on 3-11 shooting. The size of 7-foot 275 pound Kenny Frease and athleticism of grad student Andre Walker gave Gaston fits on the inside all game long. Freshman Bryan Smith, who has become the Rams most consistent threat from deep, continued his strong shooting, finishing with 12 points and three 3’s.

Our next basketball broadcast is on Wednesday when Fordham takes on St. Joseph's on the road. Tune into 90.7 FM or WFUV.org at 6:55 for the One on One pre-game report.
