Post Game Report: St John's 56 Fordham 50

by Kyle Kesses

Fordham Comes Up Just Shy at the Garden

They almost did it again. One year after overcoming a 21-point second half deficit to beat St. John’s at the Rose Hill Gym, on Saturday at Madison Square Garden, Fordham chopped a 16-point deficit down to just three but could get no closer in a 56-50 loss at the hands of the Red Storm.

As soon as the final horn blared on the New York City rivals, Fordham knew that a seven-and-a-half minute stretch (which overlapped into the first four minutes of the second half) served as their demise. Leading 26-24 with just over three minutes remaining in the opening half, the Rams allowed St. John’s to score the last 13 points of the frame and carry an 11-point advantage into the newly renovated locker rooms at the Word’s Most Famous Arena.

Chris Gaston finally put an end to the Johnnies’ mid-game dominance when the junior connected on a jumper that ignited a 7-0 Fordham run. The lead stayed between nine and 11 points for the next seven minutes of the game before Jeff Short drilled a three-pointer with 7:37 remaining in regulation to make the score 48-40. Shortly after, Bryan Smith netted a corner triple to chisel the St. John’s advantage to six with 6:24 to go.

"I really felt the crowd," said Gaston. "The last couple of minutes the crowd really got into it. I had the same feeling last year and we started to feed off the crowd."

With the crowd intensity heightening at Madison Square Garden and Fordham trailing by five points with two minutes remaining, freshman point guard Devon McMillan slashed through the St. John’s defense and slipped a pass to Kervin Bristol who charged down the right lane latter and powered home a two-handed dunk to get Fordham to within three, 53-50.

Unfortunately for the Rams, however, they would get no closer. Phil Green made one free throw on the ensuing St. John’s possession and Bryan Smith missed a long three-pointer from straight away to seal Fordham’s fate.

Branden Frazier led all scorers with 17 points while D’Angelo Harrison netted 15 to head the Red Storm attack.

On Thursday, Fordham returns to the Rose Hill Gym when the Rams welcome Texas State to the Bronx. Hear the game on 90.7 FM and beginning with the One on One Pregame Report at 6:55.
