Governor Andrew Cuomo Authorizes More Speed Cameras for NYC, Long Island

New York City and Long Island will soon get more than 200 new speed cameras to combat dangerous driving in school zones.

   Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed legislation on Wednesday that authorizes up to 125 cameras on Long Island and another 120 in New York City.

   The cameras will be installed in school zones and will operate during and immediately before and after school activities. Speeders caught by the devices would be mailed a $50 ticket.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Transportation Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan gathered Monday to announce speed camera enforcement near schools is slated to begin on Sept. 9, the city's first day of the new school year. The five-year program will include mobile and fixed cameras at unmarked locations that have been decided based on a number of factors, including: crash data and road geometry.
