WFUV CD Of The Week: Jose James

by Carmel Holt

Jose James is hard to classify, and that’s a good thing. On his new album, the aptly titled No Beginning No End, Jose shapeshifts, moves, grooves, and blurs lines between jazz, soul, and R&B, into something refreshingly new. Now a Brooklyn resident, Jose hails from Minneapolis and has moved around plenty. This was partially by necessity, as, like many artists, Jose James has had some false starts with his career. But it would also appear that changing things up suits him. After some time living in London, and successfully touring Europe and Japan, Jose recorded his new album on his own dime before finding a home with his new label, Blue Note records. Even the recording was a work in motion, recorded in three cities: New York, Paris, and London. It would seem that Jose James can’t be pinned down - to a genre, or a place, and this gives him inherent freedom, with No Beginning No End. Hear the whole album, uninterrupted, on the WFUV CD of the Week, tonight at 8.
