New Music Monday is a collection of the best new releases in music each week. We share them with you every Monday, every hour on WFUV.
Paul McCartney and Nirvana- “Cut Me Some Slack”
Talk about the Hurricane Sandy benefit show 12-12-12 was completely dominated by this joining of musical forces. This song is the first single from Grohl’s documentary about the show "Sound City."
Josh Ritter- “Joy to You Baby”
Off Ritter’s next release, The Beast In Its Tracks, this new track seems to be an incredibly personal release. The stripped down style and focus on relationship seems to reflect the songwriter’s recent breakup.
Camper Van Beethoven- “Northern California Girls”
The California band has written another love song about their home state. It’s the first single off the band’s first new album in nine years, La Costa Perdida.
Erin McKeown- Manifestra
Folk singer McKeown has never been afraid to take chances. Recently she was named a Harvard scholar and even collaborated with MSNBC pundit Rachel Maddow. Her new album Manifestra focuses on her folk roots and she still kills it.
Fiction Family- “Up Against the Wall”
This collaboration between Nickel Creek’s Sean Watkins and Switchfoot’s Jon Forman was unexpected from fans of both bands, but with this new release we hear that it really works.
Frightened Rabbit- “The Woodpile”
These Scottish rockers are pretty consistent. We’ve loved their past few releases and so far we’re into their forthcoming one, Pedestrian Verse.
The Last Bison- Inheritance
Ben Hardesty’s collective recently changed their name from Bison to The Last Bison. While the name change is mysterious, we know that this new album is named after the guitar that Ben’s father gave him when he was two years old.
Jimbo Mathus & The Tri-State Coalition- White Buffalo
Mississippi label Fat Possum is clearly trying to get back to their bluesy roots with this new signing. Jimbo definitely does that for them with this great Southern blues record.
Madeleine Peyroux- “Changing All Those Changes”
Peyroux just released this new single off her upcoming album The Blue Room. The album features covers of classics by Buddy Holly, Leonard Cohen, Ray Charles, and more, which sounds pretty perfect for Madeleine, right?
Rhythms Del Mundo- Africa
The Artists Project Earth created this album in order to raise awareness for climate change. It features covers and remixes of artists like Beyoncé, Mumford, Coldplay and more by prominent African artists.
The Mavericks- “Come Unto Me”
The band came out with their great four song EP Born To Be Blue last year, but now they are ready to release their first album of original songs in ten years at the end of January. This track is the first single off that new album In Time.
