An Invitation to Wilco's World: WFUV Solid Sound 2013 Preview

by Carmel Holt

Jeff Tweedy has said of Solid Sound that it’s the “big picture, the full picture” of Wilco: the only place they really get to display all the different aspects of what they like to do as a band. For Wilco fans, it is an unparalleled opportunity to engage in an interactive way with their world. It seems right to call this inspiring, unique three-day event a “celebration” of music, comedy, and art. Calling Solid Sound a festival calls to mind the big name summer festivals that we’re accustomed to, and this - well…this is something else.

Solid Sound will once again be held on the 13-acre campus of the awesome Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (Mass MoCA) in the Berkshires, for the third time since 2010. Wilco headlines Friday and Saturday night, there are 18 other bands, handpicked by Wilco, scheduled to perform on four stages, including: Neko Case, Low, Foxygen, Medeski Martin & Wood, and Yo La Tengo. Wilco’s side projects, like The Autumn Defense, play. John Hodgman (The Daily Show) will host a comedy caberet, as well as Wilco’s first-ever all-request show on Friday night. Jeff Tweedy and other members of the band have planned premieres of sonic performance art throughout the weekend in the galleries of Mass MoCA. There are activities like guided star gazing with an astronomer, falconry demonstrations, homebrewing lessons, demonstrations on how to raise chickens in your backyard, just to name a few, and tons of pop-up performances and surprises around every corner. The backdrop is a jaw-dropping collection of 19th century former factory buildings turned art and performance spaces, one as large as a football field. It’s surrounded by the deep green of the Berkshires, making it the perfect marriage of natural and industrial majesty. WFUV is going to be there for the first time this weekend, and we couldn’t be more excited! Join us this Saturday night from 7pm to Midnight, as Rita Houston and I bring you live coverage of Solid Sound, including broadcasts of Neko Case’s set (which will undoubtedly include a TON of new songs from her forthcoming new album!), and Wilco’s Saturday night show. WFUV brings you into Wilco’s world this weekend. Let the celebration begin.

Funding for WFUV's ongoing coverage of live concerts and festivals comes from The Agnes Varis Trust, supporting affordable access to the arts, education and healthcare.
