In a rare move this week on The Bottomless Pit, I'll be drawing heavily from some records that have my name on them, like Hillbilly Music, Thank God, Vol. 1, a compilation album that I put together back in 1990 of post-WWII country music from the Capitol Records vaults. We'll hear some remarkable and vital stuff from Merle Travis, Skeets McDonald, Rose Maddox (pictured above) and more.
Then we'll hear a great Merle Haggard tribute album from 1994, Tulare Dust. I was delighted when Dave Alvin asked me to come on board with this one, along with John Doe, Iris DeMent, Lucinda Williams, Joe Ely, et. al.
Then, for the last third of the hour, I'll let my iPod finish the show for me, which is usually a winning strategy.
That's The Bottomless Pit, right after the great Vin Scelsa and just before the great Kara Manning, Saturdays at 10pm EDT on 90.7FM WFUV and streaming online.
If you miss a show, catch up to The Bottomless Pit in the FUV archives for up to two weeks after broadcast.
