Aimee Mann - Live Concert - 2012

I don't know why Aimee Mann has a reputation of being prickly or cold. But everybody I told about my session says, "good luck," as though she might take off my head. On the contrary, I've found Aimee Mann quite warm in multiple meetings and interviews. She is funny, available and, no surprise here—very bright. A great conversationalist, in fact.

Today, she is exhausted, though. She's just recorded two videos and several "promotional" versions of her songs and is about to launch into a slew of interviews ... all BEFORE doing a show for an FUV audience at Electric Lady Studios. It's all making her a little anxious about delivering on all she's promised today, but Aimee is still in good humor and cheerfully launches into a spirited chat about her new record, Charmers. Her mood darkens briefly when we touch on the trouble the music biz is in, but her attitude towards those who steal music is "live and let live."

As for the new CD, it leans hard on her pop influences from the 70's, but those influences translate into something entirely fresh: broad musical gestures and (of course) her signature hooks. One highlight: a duet with James Mercer of the Shins.

Listen below for my conversation with Aimee, as well as trio performances of new and longtime favorites from her catalog.

Alabama Shakes - Live Concert - 2012

Alabama Shakes hails from a small town and grew up soaked in the sounds of Muscle Shoals. Anchored by mesmerizing frontwoman Brittany Howard, they've recently taken the music world by storm with their blues-drenched grooves and gritty appeal. Alice Smith - Live Concert - 2013

Alice Smith has an intriguing combination of influences. Growing up between Washington, DC and a Georgia farm, this Fordham alum has developed a style that jumps fences, from rock to R&B and soul. Today she releases an impressive and nuanced second album called She, and Alice used her four-octave range to belt out a few of the new songs (plus covers of Cee-Lo and Jeff Buckley) during a recent FUV Live show at City Winery.

Calexico - Live Concert - 2012

With influences from Mexican music and Western Americana, the Tuscon-based band Calexico has been weaving their "desert noir" soundscape for almost 20 years now. Their eighth album, Algiers, comes out today and was inspired by New Orleans, where it was recorded. To celebrate, the band recently performed an FUV Live set at Hill Country Live here in New York City, and I had a chance to talk with Joey Burns about why the band decided on New Orleans and how they all balance being in Calexico with a long list of other projects.

Dawes - Live Concert - 2013

L.A. band Dawes made its way across the U.S. (via a tour of independent record stores) to New York City to give a small audience of WFUV members a taste of their upcoming album, Stories Don't End, due out on April 9th. They played soon-to be-classics like "Someone Will" and "Hey Lover," as well as fan favorites like "Time Spent In Los Angeles" and "A Little Bit of Everything."

The crowd at Rockwood Music Hall sang along at the top of their lungs, and we expect that you'll be singing along at home, too. The night's host, FUV Program Director Rita Houston, briefly talked with frontman Taylor Goldsmith about the making of the new album, and we got a great story from Taylor about the coolest phone call he ever received.

As Rita wrapped up the show, the band surprised her and the audience by coming back on stage to perform a rompin' encore. You can hear everything that went down that night.
