Shovels and Rope

Shovels and Rope - FUV Live - 2014

by Carmel Holt

This Charleston-based duo consists of married songwriters Michael Trent and Cary Ann Hearst. The couple's recently released sophomore album, Swimmin' Time, is a unique blend of roots-rock, acoustic flavoring and a sharp, indie-rock edge. The record also showcases the strength of the duo’s musical relationship, with Trent and Hearst both sharing lead vocals and playing a variety of instruments. Shovels and Rope recently stopped by Studio A to play us some of their new songs and we'll hear that performance and my conversation with the duo during this episode of FUV Live.

Shovels and Rope - Live Concert - 2012

by Eric Holland

We headed to Electric Lady Studios for an FUV Live show with this husband-and-wife duo from Charleston, South Carolina. Shovels & Rope takes inspiration from forebears like X and The Cramps, but they've got their own brand of folky cow-punk that's both raucous and tender. Their terrific debut album, O' Be Joyful, recently came out, and we thought a live set was in order too.
