Erin McKeown - Words and Music - 2013

by Alisa Ali

The lovely Erin McKeown graced the WFUV studios again, this time in support of her latest album, Manifestra. The title is certainly appropriate, and during the interview Erin admited that, at first, she didn't even realize she'd made up a new word. I think "manifestra" should be a word though and I will launch a petition to Webster's Dictionary to have it added once I stop listening to her record—which may not be anytime soon. I am obsessed with it!

WFUV CD of the Week: Erin McKeown

by Carmel Holt

Being independent is admirable, but it’s what you do with that independence that defines your work. Erin McKeown seems to know this. She is an independent artist in the truest sense of the word, especially now, as she strikes out on her own with her self-released seventh album, Manifestra. What Erin has done with her independence over the years is to experiment with musical genres (folk, jazz standards, pop, rock), mixing and matching them as different vehicles for delivering her always-smart, honest lyrics, and therefore defying easy categorization.

WFUV Pop Quiz: Erin McKeown

by Laura Fedele

Erin McKeown spared some time to take the WFUV Pop Quiz with Darren DeVivo. Here she talks about her recently developed love for Bob Dylan, her dependence on striped tube socks and her former love affair with Chef Boyardee.

Aside from gear, your instruments or your band, you don't go on the road without...
My iPhone. Does that count as gear? What's something to me that's indispensable? Tube socks.
The ones with stripes on the side?
That's right.
What song do you wish you had written and why?

From flight to swing, Erin McKeown is spanning a lot of ground between her last album -- 'We Will Become Like Birds' -- and her next -- 'Sing You Sinners.' As you might guess from the latter title, the new record is a collection of standards given the McKeown treatment, and tonight we get just a taste of them as Erin joins Claudia Marshall in Studio-A.

With a collection of standards and a live record, Erin McKeown kept busy in the four years between albums of original material, but the time was also well-spent honing and shaping a new batch of tunes. New sounds also come into play on the resulting record called 'Hundreds of Lions,' and Erin talked with host Darren DeVivo about the factors of time, money, and inspiration behind it, when she stopped by 'FUV's Studio A. Patty Larkin is one of the best acoustic guitar players in the business, which might explain why's she been a successful musician for so long. Her new album, '25,' is a tribute of sorts to her twenty-five years in music, and she was joined by Erin McKeown and FUV's own Claudia Marshall in studio-A. (3/18/10)
